Long plagued by Microsoft Publisher files submitted by a typical (in the commercial print world) customer base that’s ill-equipped and uneducated in the process of preparing digital content for print, Matthews discovered Markzware’s PUB2ID plug-in.Markzware followed up with Matthews some months later to find out how the application had helped solve some of the conversion problems he’d been facing when dealing with Microsoft Publisher files, and he was gracious to share his thoughts:Markzware: Is Progressive Printing’s clientele mostly local to the Martinsburg area? Or does your client base extend beyond the local market?Matthews: About 60% of our clients are in the Martinsburg area. Dave Matthews heads up the prepress department at Progressive Printing, a Martinsburg, WV commercial printing facility.
Convert Pub To Mac From OurWe bought it because we were having an increase in the number of files coming from Publisher. When did you buy that application, and what prompted you to do so? Do you get a lot of clients who bring in Microsoft Publisher files?Matthews: We purchased the plug-in in the first week of January 2008. We prefer to receive PDF files ready to go to press, but most clients do not know how to create a PDF.Markzware: Do you provide your customers with any guideline on preferred file formats and instructions on how to set up their content files so that they’re easier to process through prepress—and ultimately to print?Matthews: We have offered guidelines and how-tos on how to get files press ready, but they don’t follow through, and it’s easier for us to just fix the job than with the customer to embed fonts or stop using RGB Markzware: I understand that you purchased Markzware’s plug-in PUB2ID. That is how we get new customers, good word from existing customers.Markzware: I would imagine that you see a lot of different file formats coming into the shop—folks bringing you content that’s been created in everything from Photoshop and InDesign to Microsoft Word and old versions of PageMaker, correct? What types of file formats are most popular? And what types of file formats do you prefer to receive if at all possible?Matthews: We mostly get Publisher files from clients that are at home designers. Our shop is mostly known for customer service. It paid for itself in the first week, because I had a big book to deal with, and if I didn’t have the PUB2ID plug-in, I would probably still be working on that book.In past issues of the DoubleClick we have looked at a lot of scathingly brilliant software from Markzware. How does it enable you to bring Publisher files into InDesign, and is the process easy/seamless?Matthews: PUB2ID makes it very easy to deal with these files from customers.Markzware: Have you encountered any problems with conversion? And if so, what types of issues have you run into?Matthews: The only problem is fonts really, and that is because of PC fonts versus Mac fonts and customers not knowing how to embed fonts—even though I have gone over it hundreds of times for the same few customers.Markzware: Generally speaking, was the investment in PUB2ID worthwhile? Have you been able to justify the expenditure, and if so, how quickly did it pay for itself?Matthews: The plug-in was a great investment. So tell me how PUB2ID has worked for you. The PUB2ID plug-in has allowed me to stop booting up the PC for that one job a week.Markzware: Your creative tools of choice are those within Adobe’s Creative Suite 3. Have you run into that problem a lot, and if so, how has the acquisition of PUB2ID enabled you to avoid those types of conversations?Matthews: We have around 10% of our customers who use Publisher. Now we don’t worry when a Publisher file comes into the shop.Markzware: You and I both know that Publisher files are anything but “print friendly” or “print ready.” But it’s often hard to explain that to a customer who doesn’t quite understand the nuances of what a “print-ready” file consists of. The magic part is that Markzware plug-ins do it quickly, accurately, and elegantly. As such, many of you may not be familiar with their products but in the world of desktop publishing Markzware is a name associated with a long history of wonderful document conversion utilities that make it possible to radically reduce the time it takes to import and use text and pictures from documents created in other desktop publishing applications. For people who use InDesign, Quark and PageMaker, Markzware makes plug-ins that make it possible to easily import content and convert entire documents between creator applications without losing the appearence of the original document. Clarke put it, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic).Markzware is famous for their FlightCheck software and their PM2Q, ID2Q and Q2ID plug-ins for QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign. Markzware stuff qualifies. Download mx video player for macThis reflects Microsoft’s emphasis on Publisher as an easy-to-use and less expensive alternative to the “heavyweights” and also its focus on the small business market where firms do not have dedicated design professionals available to make marketing materials and other documents. Publisher is included in high-end editions of Microsoft Office. Recent versions of the program have greater capabilities concerning color separations and proper process coloring output.Publisher 2007 also includes the capability to output commercial press quality PDF with embedded fonts as an optional download from the Microsoft website. PUB2ID works with InDesign v4.x or 5.x (CS2 or CS3). The latest offering from Markzware, called Microsoft Publisher to InDesign, or PUB2ID, is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign that can convert all of your Microsoft Publisher into Adobe InDesign documents so you can update and work with them.In order to use it you will need a Mac running Tiger or better or a PC running Windows 2000, XP or Vista and 250 Megs of hard drive space. This means that documents created with Microsoft Publisher can not generally be imported into more popular applications like Adobe InDesign. When it’s time to go beyond what Microsoft Publisher can offer in the way of professional document design, it has typically been necessary to rebuild such publications from scratch in InDesign, a process that’s both slow and fraught with the possibility of introducing errors. ![]() My own experience is that this warning is more an expression of modesty that a serious disclaimer. In common with the other Markzware conversion tools I have used, (which includes InDesign to Quark, Quark to InDesign, and PageMaker to Quark), this newly released PUB2ID v1.5 comes with the warning from Markzware that the document conversion will not be exact but the time saved will be considerable, especially if there is a large document or a large number of small documents to convert. Because of the different ways that the various publishing programs handle the same tasks, like text flow, fonts and runaround, there is a distinct possibility that the converted document will need to be tweaked a bit in order to get it looking exactly as you want it, but the minor adjustments will be far less arduous than totally re-creating the document. If you need to work with documents originally created in Publisher the PUB2ID document conversion technology will save you countless hours of scanning, re-keying and formatting. This product converts and transforms files created with Microsoft Publisher into an Adobe InDesign file on either Macintosh or Windows platforms. ![]()
